Michael and Catherine came over to America May 16,2023 with their infant daughter Catherine. They left John, Michael and Anthony with relatives. The 1900 Census shows that they lost a child. This would confirms the Catherine in 1863. John came over in 1869, Michael 1875, Anthony 1874, There was suppose to be relaitives here at the time and the others came over leaving their children behind and arriving to stay with relatives. It is not known who Micheal and Catherine stayed with when they arrived.

Here is a story Rose Carey his granddaughter would tell about Michael Carey. He was a small tiny man. Some of the children were even bigger then him She would say that he was a great story teller and love to talk about Ireland. He had allot of grandchildren and on Saturday. They would all go sit on the hill and listen to him tell his stories. This gave the parents a break. Her father would buy him a bottle of sprits. The more he drank the better the stories. She would tell us about the brownies and the fairies and of course he love to sing the Irish songs and dance. She said it was so much fun as a child. He has a way of making a story come alive. Was like going to the movies on a Saturday, was a big treat. He had the gift of the gab and he just loved kids. He was very adored by his family.

1900 Census
Shows Micheal and Catherine married 40 years, owning their home. It shows they had 11 children and 10 living., which confirms Catherine's birth and her death . Their daughter Katie Hanley and Micheal Hanley married 1 year. Kaite Hanley had one child and one living but there doesn't seem to be a child living with them., anyone born after June 1, 2023 would not have been listed. The baby must have been living in the house but born after June 1, 1900. Micheal and Catherine are showing they came to America in 1864. It does not show them becoming a ciitzen. They have been here 36 year in 1900. Micheal Carey and Micheal Hanley are listed as laborer.

All could speak English. Micheal could read but not write and Catherine could not read or write . All others could read and write.

Michael's Birthday shows as Mar but on the 1870 Census shows he was born in 1835 and Catherine 1840

They Arrived May 19 , 1864 on Universe Campus in N. Y. with their infant daughter Catherine.Legand has it that they lost there infant daugther on the ship or shortly there after. It shows Birthdates as Michael abt 1834 , age 30 , Catherine abt 1839, age 25 and Baby Cathine as infant.

I believe that Michael first came to a small mining area around Lost Creek and Girardville called Colorado (not sure of spelling but pronounced like ray dough). Then he moved to Lost Creek or Deansville. His son-in-law, Michael Hanley lived in with him. His son Edward (my grandfather) lived next door. My grandfather eventually moved to the 300 block of West Main street Girardville

Michael and Catherine spoke Galic language.

The Town of Colorado does not longer exist. It was by Lost Creek and was basiclly shacks. The homes evenually just disappeared.

Michael became a citizen on September 13, 1968 James O'Connel was his sponsor.

His two children's godparents were John Neary and Mary Neary for Catherine, and John Murphy and Maire Murphy for Anthony.

On Michael Carey's tomestone it shows him dying at age 84 which would make his birth date of 1821. Many men lied about their birthdays at this time to get job. Census records were not taken seriously, and family members sometimes didn't even know when they were born.
Katherine's Burial Records says she was 72 years old on Sept 1, 1908. This would make her birth year as 1836.

The birthday of 1835 for Michael and 1940 for Katherine is used here since the Ship Record and several Census records seems to confirm this year would be most likely birth year.
